Very little strategy is required as the game is completely random and based entirely on luck. Split Bet - The chip is placed on the line separating two adjacent numbers. Pays 17:1. Roulette is said by some to have been started or invented way back in 1655 by the French scientist Blaise Pascal, during his monastic retreat, and first played in a makeshift casino in Paris. One is the standard table, which has one betting layout with the roulette wheel at one end; the other, called the double-end table, has two layouts with the wheel in the center between them. A roulette table with a single layout is usually worked by two "croupiers". The players begin by making their bets, placing chips on the spaces of the layout in the manner permitted by the applicable rules for the area/state/country etc. The dealer spins the wheel in a counterclockwise direction then flips the ball on the bowl's back track so that it travels clockwise. American Roulette is played using a wheel that consists of thirty-eight slots, each with its own number. The ball then drops into one of the slots as it begins to slow down. That aside, French roulette is very similar to American roulette. Roulette would be a great game were it not for the highhouse edge - usually 5.26%, sometimes as low as 2.63%, which is still higherthan blackjack, craps, or baccarat. Making a bet is easy - you just place your chip(s) on the number(s), color, orsets you want to bet on. Then he'll scoop up all the losing bets towards the dealer area. In other games the color of the chipdenotes the denomination, but in Roulette the color denotes only which playerthe chip belongs to. Minimum bets work differently for inside and outside bets. Remember thatyou can bet inside or outside if you like; there's no requirement to bet both ona given spin. Here's ahandy way to remember the payouts when you're betting on a set of numbers: Take36 divided by the quantity of numbers you're betting on, and subtract 1. There's an old saying,"The wheel has no memory. Now let's sayyou've been playing Roulette for a few hours, betting on Red every time, andyou've been keeping track of what numbers have hit. There have been 152 spins (coincidentally,4 x 38), and so we expect that each number should have come up 4 times onaverage. Thechances of #27 coming up on a given spin are the same, whether it just come upon the last spin or not - 1 in 38. It's more important to know what the house edge is, than how to calculateit, but here's a quick analysis in case you're interested. Your odds of winning aone-number bet are 37 to 1 (37 ways to lose, 1 way to win) Atlantic City has a special rule whichreduces the house edge to 2.7% on even money bets (Red/Black, Odd/Even,1-18/19-36): If 0 or 00 comes up on on even money bet, you lose only half yourbet. European games have an option called en prison which reduces the house edgeto 1.35%, but it's generally not available in the U.S., even in casinos that usethe European wheel. Ifyou win the second spin, your bet is "released from prison" and youget it back. You don't get paid for the win, though, but it's better than losingit outright. One to six players are seated at the roulette table. They may not be removed from the table when the player leaves. The betting layout starts with numbers 0 and 00 at the top, then extends from numbers 1 through 36 at the far end of the table. Additional combinations in this "inside" betting area are: one chip on a six number bet (pays 5 to 1); one chip on any four connecting numbers (pays 8 to 1); one chip on any connecting group of three numbers (11-1); one chip place between two connecting numbers (17-to-1) The dealer knows you are the winner by the color of your chips. The perfectly balanced roulette wheel consists of 38 identical slots, individually numbered from 0, 00, 1 through 36. In total, 38 numbers are represented on the betting layout. It bounces among the slots and finally falls into one of the numbered slots. By design, they alternate between red and black and exactly opposite each other number is the corresponding higher and lower number. Run a ruler or any straight edge across the diagram and you will see that the O is opposite the 00, 1 is opposite the 2, and so on up to the 35 being directly opposite the 36. The house edge is set at 5.26%, resulting from the player receiving odds of 35 to 1 rather than the true odds of 1 in 36 or 37 to 1. The single-0 European roulette wheel has a house edge of only 2.70%.
