Very little strategy is required as the game is completely random and based entirely on luck. By the skillful placing of bets on the table, a player can vary the amount of risk he is taking. American roulette wheels usually have both the “0” and “00” on the wheel. Straight Up Bet - A chip is placed on one of the numbers. Pays 35:1. Split Bet - The chip is placed on the line separating two adjacent numbers. Pays 17:1. Roulette is said by some to have been started or invented way back in 1655 by the French scientist Blaise Pascal, during his monastic retreat, and first played in a makeshift casino in Paris. Other historians claim however that a French monk invented it in order to help break some of the monotony of daily monastery life. Still others say it originated in an old Chinese game whose object was to arrange 37 statuettes of animals in a "magic square" of 666 (but they fail to describe the method of play) He does this as the ball slows down and is about to drop off the back track. Bets placed on the layout after this announcement are not valid and must be returned to the player(s) The numbers alternate between black and red. Both the 0 and 00 slots are green in color. A dealer (known as a croupier) spins the wheel in one direction and then rolls a small ball in the other direction. Making a bet is easy - you just place your chip(s) on the number(s), color, orsets you want to bet on. In most games players can continuemaking bets even while the ball is still spinning. Then he'll scoop up all the losing bets towards the dealer area. That way, you're not locked inand you always have the ability to change your mind. Roulette chips can in fact be any denomination - $1, $5,$25, etc. When you buy in, tell the dealer what denomination you want. Minimum bets work differently for inside and outside bets. For outside bets, any bet you make has to be the table minimum. Here's ahandy way to remember the payouts when you're betting on a set of numbers: Take36 divided by the quantity of numbers you're betting on, and subtract 1. You can certainly switch toanother number if you want, but that won't improve or worsen your chances. It's more important to know what the house edge is, than how to calculateit, but here's a quick analysis in case you're interested. Your odds of winning aone-number bet are 37 to 1 (37 ways to lose, 1 way to win) On even money bets when 0 comes up, instead of losing rightaway, your bet is "imprisoned" and rides again for the next spin. You don't get paid for the win, though, but it's better than losingit outright. In effect, this variation has the ability to turn a loss into a tie. Players purchase special roulette chips, each player with his own color, so that the dealer can tell who made a winning bet and pay off that player. A stack of twenty 25-cent chips is valued at $5.00, and a stack of twenty 50-cent chips is worth $10. It is important to note that these roulette chips must be cashed in at the table. This area is referred to as the "inside" betting area. A bet on 1 to 18, or 19 to 36, pays even money. All inside bets are paid by the dealer, directly to you. Again, your original bet is left on the number or combination of numbers and it is up to you to reclaim that bet. That number is the declared winner for that game. Run a ruler or any straight edge across the diagram and you will see that the O is opposite the 00, 1 is opposite the 2, and so on up to the 35 being directly opposite the 36. All in all, that edge is comparable to the "rake" in poker, and in some bets on the craps table, in baccarat and other games including sports betting. The single-0 European roulette wheel has a house edge of only 2.70%.
