Players bet on numbers, spreads of number combinations and colors, generated by the fall of a small ivory ball onto a spinning wheel which is divided into 37 or 38 numbered slots, depending on the version being played. Very little strategy is required as the game is completely random and based entirely on luck. By the skillful placing of bets on the table, a player can vary the amount of risk he is taking. A bet placed on the ball landing on red or black, high or low numbers, odds or even numbers. Dozens Bet - The numbers between 1 and 36 are divided into three dozens. There are two standard styles of roulette tables found in American casinos. A roulette table with a single layout is usually worked by two "croupiers". The croupier who spins the wheel and deals the game is called the "wheel roller" by casino employees. The ball then drops into one of the slots as it begins to slow down. You should always calculate your expectedloss and how long you can play on a given bankroll before playing any game, butwith roulette it's especially important. Making a bet is easy - you just place your chip(s) on the number(s), color, orsets you want to bet on. For most bets it's fairly obvious - you can't miss theRed diamond for Red bets, and things like Even, 1-18, and 1st 12 are written outin plain English. When the ball is gettingready to drop, the dealer will wave his hand over the table, which means "Nomore bets". Each player's chips are a different color. Sometimes the dealerwill ask you "Inside or Outside? That way, you're not locked inand you always have the ability to change your mind. Roulette chips can in fact be any denomination - $1, $5,$25, etc. When you buy in, tell the dealer what denomination you want. In this way, Roulette is more like slots - one single bet canwin a lot. It's important tounderstand that the outcome of the roulette wheel is truly random. " That means it doesn't know what it spunbefore, and even if it did, the wheel can't select what number comes up out ofits own volition. Here's another example: Since there are 38 slots on the wheel,we expect any given number to hit 1 out of 38 spins on average. On an American wheel,there are 38 spots - numbers 1-36, plus 0 and 00. Your odds of winning aone-number bet are 37 to 1 (37 ways to lose, 1 way to win) European games have an option called en prison which reduces the house edgeto 1.35%, but it's generally not available in the U.S., even in casinos that usethe European wheel. Ifyou win the second spin, your bet is "released from prison" and youget it back. One to six players are seated at the roulette table. Usually it takes a minimum of $20 to buy-in at the roulette betting table. Inside bets consist of the following: single-number bets, including the 0, 00 and 1 through 36, are made by placing your chip in the centre of the number you select. Red or black pays even odds. The dealer knows you are the winner by the color of your chips. Naturally, you can let it ride again on the next roll or even add other chips from your winnings. In total, 38 numbers are represented on the betting layout. It bounces among the slots and finally falls into one of the numbered slots. Incidentally, there are about 90 spins or games played per hour, on average. You will notice on our illustration of the standard roulette wheel that the numbers are not consecutively arranged around the wheel. The single-0 European roulette wheel has a house edge of only 2.70%. The player has a 1 in 37 chance of winning and still gets 35 to 1.
