Players bet on numbers, spreads of number combinations and colors, generated by the fall of a small ivory ball onto a spinning wheel which is divided into 37 or 38 numbered slots, depending on the version being played. By the skillful placing of bets on the table, a player can vary the amount of risk he is taking. This gives the players slightly better odds. A roulette table with a single layout is usually worked by two "croupiers". To keep it simple, we'll call him the "dealer" and his assistant the "croupier". The dealer spins the wheel in a counterclockwise direction then flips the ball on the bowl's back track so that it travels clockwise. The numbers on the American roulette wheel are 1 to 36, 0, and 00. The numbers alternate pairs of odd numbers with pairs of even numbers. That aside, French roulette is very similar to American roulette. The house edge is the same whether youmake one bet per spin or several. Don't reach for your winnings until the dealerremoves the marker, or the dealer will scold you. If you're asked Inside or Outside, always answer "Both",even if you only intend to bet one or the other. That way, you're not locked inand you always have the ability to change your mind. There's no advantage tolimiting yourself to inside or outside. Roulette chips can in fact be any denomination - $1, $5,$25, etc. Roulette games have minimum bets, which will be posted on aplacard at the table. All the bets on the layout carry the same house edge, with the exceptionof 5-number Line Bet (0, 00, 1, 2, 3), which carries a whopping 7.29% edge! Black and Red still have equal chances of hitting. It's more important to know what the house edge is, than how to calculateit, but here's a quick analysis in case you're interested. Your odds of winning aone-number bet are 37 to 1 (37 ways to lose, 1 way to win) The Europeanwheel has a lower house edge (2.63%) because it has only 37 slots instead of 38(no 00) European games have an option called en prison which reduces the house edgeto 1.35%, but it's generally not available in the U.S., even in casinos that usethe European wheel. On even money bets when 0 comes up, instead of losing rightaway, your bet is "imprisoned" and rides again for the next spin. You don't get paid for the win, though, but it's better than losingit outright. The chips generally have a set value of 25 or 50 cents. Each game begins when the dealer (sometimes called croupier) spins the wheel in one direction, and then rolls a little ivory ball along the inner edge of the wheel in the opposite direction. You will notice on our illustration of the standard roulette wheel that the numbers are not consecutively arranged around the wheel. By design, they alternate between red and black and exactly opposite each other number is the corresponding higher and lower number. The player has a 1 in 37 chance of winning and still gets 35 to 1.
