Roulette is a popular and classic casino game that is easy to play and has an enthusiastic following in online gaming. By the skillful placing of bets on the table, a player can vary the amount of risk he is taking. American roulette wheels usually have both the “0” and “00” on the wheel. Each player's chips are a different color. That way iftwo players bet on the same number (or set of numbers), then the dealer knowswho to pay, and arguments can't arise over who bet what. That's because if you're betting only inside and someone else isbetting only outside, he can give you both the same color chips and there won'tbe any confusion. In other games the color of the chipdenotes the denomination, but in Roulette the color denotes only which playerthe chip belongs to. Inside bets canusually be as small a you like, as long as the total of all your inside bets isthe table minimum. All the bets on the layout carry the same house edge, with the exceptionof 5-number Line Bet (0, 00, 1, 2, 3), which carries a whopping 7.29% edge! It's important tounderstand that the outcome of the roulette wheel is truly random. Here's another example: Since there are 38 slots on the wheel,we expect any given number to hit 1 out of 38 spins on average. It's more important to know what the house edge is, than how to calculateit, but here's a quick analysis in case you're interested. On an American wheel,there are 38 spots - numbers 1-36, plus 0 and 00. Your odds of winning aone-number bet are 37 to 1 (37 ways to lose, 1 way to win) if you win, thecasino doesn't pay you 37 to 1, they pay you less - 35 to 1. If you play Roulette, the most important thing is to find a casino thatoffers the European wheel (which is called "Single 0" Roulette) A stack of twenty 25-cent chips is valued at $5.00, and a stack of twenty 50-cent chips is worth $10. They may not be removed from the table when the player leaves. The betting layout starts with numbers 0 and 00 at the top, then extends from numbers 1 through 36 at the far end of the table. Additional combinations in this "inside" betting area are: one chip on a six number bet (pays 5 to 1); one chip on any four connecting numbers (pays 8 to 1); one chip on any connecting group of three numbers (11-1); one chip place between two connecting numbers (17-to-1) The "outside" betting area consists of odd or even bets which pay even money. You will get 2-to-1 odds if you select the winning number within the first, second or third dozen numbers. Again, your original bet is left on the number or combination of numbers and it is up to you to reclaim that bet. Naturally, you can let it ride again on the next roll or even add other chips from your winnings. Each game begins when the dealer (sometimes called croupier) spins the wheel in one direction, and then rolls a little ivory ball along the inner edge of the wheel in the opposite direction. As the wheel turns, the ball loses momentum. You will notice on our illustration of the standard roulette wheel that the numbers are not consecutively arranged around the wheel. Run a ruler or any straight edge across the diagram and you will see that the O is opposite the 00, 1 is opposite the 2, and so on up to the 35 being directly opposite the 36.
