Roulette is said by some to have been started or invented way back in 1655 by the French scientist Blaise Pascal, during his monastic retreat, and first played in a makeshift casino in Paris. Other historians claim however that a French monk invented it in order to help break some of the monotony of daily monastery life. There are two standard styles of roulette tables found in American casinos. He does this as the ball slows down and is about to drop off the back track. That aside, French roulette is very similar to American roulette. The numbers alternate between black and red. Both the 0 and 00 slots are green in color. A dealer, or croupier spins the wheel in one direction and then rolls a small ball in the other direction. For most bets it's fairly obvious - you can't miss theRed diamond for Red bets, and things like Even, 1-18, and 1st 12 are written outin plain English. In most games players can continuemaking bets even while the ball is still spinning. Then he'll scoop up all the losing bets towards the dealer area. Don't reach for your winnings until the dealerremoves the marker, or the dealer will scold you. Each player's chips are a different color. That way iftwo players bet on the same number (or set of numbers), then the dealer knowswho to pay, and arguments can't arise over who bet what. That way, you're not locked inand you always have the ability to change your mind. When you buy in, tell the dealer what denomination you want. For outside bets, any bet you make has to be the table minimum. Inside bets canusually be as small a you like, as long as the total of all your inside bets isthe table minimum. All the bets on the layout carry the same house edge, with the exceptionof 5-number Line Bet (0, 00, 1, 2, 3), which carries a whopping 7.29% edge! Black and Red still have equal chances of hitting. Here's another example: Since there are 38 slots on the wheel,we expect any given number to hit 1 out of 38 spins on average. Now let's sayyou've been playing Roulette for a few hours, betting on Red every time, andyou've been keeping track of what numbers have hit. On an American wheel, there are 38 spots - numbers 1-36, plus 0 and 00. European games have an option called en prison which reduces the house edgeto 1.35%, but it's generally not available in the U.S., even in casinos that usethe European wheel. In effect, this variation has the ability to turn a loss into a tie. One to six players are seated at the roulette table. The chips generally have a set value of 25 or 50 cents. A stack of twenty 25-cent chips is valued at $5.00, and a stack of twenty 50-cent chips is worth $10. Players may bet larger amounts by using $1, $5 and $25 regular. The betting layout starts with numbers 0 and 00 at the top, then extends from numbers 1 through 36 at the far end of the table. Additional combinations in this "inside" betting area are: one chip on a six number bet (pays 5 to 1); one chip on any four connecting numbers (pays 8 to 1); one chip on any connecting group of three numbers (11-1); one chip place between two connecting numbers (17-to-1) You will get 2-to-1 odds if you select the winning number within the first, second or third dozen numbers. In total, 38 numbers are represented on the betting layout. That number is the declared winner for that game. Incidentally, there are about 90 spins or games played per hour, on average. Run a ruler or any straight edge across the diagram and you will see that the O is opposite the 00, 1 is opposite the 2, and so on up to the 35 being directly opposite the 36. All red numbers are opposite the black numbers.
