Players bet on numbers, spreads of number combinations and colors, generated by the fall of a small ivory ball onto a spinning wheel which is divided into 37 or 38 numbered slots, depending on the version being played. Very little strategy is required as the game is completely random and based entirely on luck. Straight Up Bet - A chip is placed on one of the numbers. Pays 35:1. Five Number Bet - This bet covers only the numbers 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3. Pays 6:1 if any one of the numbers comes up. Column Bets - A bet on which of the three columns of numbers the ball may landon. Pays 2:1. There are two standard styles of roulette tables found in American casinos. A roulette table with a single layout is usually worked by two "croupiers". A double-end table with two layouts is operated by either three or four croupiers. The dealer spins the wheel in a counterclockwise direction then flips the ball on the bowl's back track so that it travels clockwise. Players may continue placing bets while wheel and ball are still in motion until the dealer yells (says) "No More Bets! The numbers on the American roulette wheel are 1 to 36, 0, and 00. The numbers alternate between black and red. A dealer, or croupier spins the wheel in one direction and then rolls a small ball in the other direction. For most bets it's fairly obvious - you can't miss theRed diamond for Red bets, and things like Even, 1-18, and 1st 12 are written outin plain English. We've added blue circled letters to the diagram to point outhow to make the not-so-obvious bets (the sets of 2-6 numbers) You don't have to make just one kind of bet foreach spin, you can make several, and you win if the ball lands on any of yournumbers. New players often have to betold this repeatedly the first time they play because they kept forgetting andbecause they're excited about collecting their winnings. Each player's chips are a different color. That's because if you're betting only inside and someone else isbetting only outside, he can give you both the same color chips and there won'tbe any confusion. That way, you're not locked inand you always have the ability to change your mind. Inside bets canusually be as small a you like, as long as the total of all your inside bets isthe table minimum. Remember thatyou can bet inside or outside if you like; there's no requirement to bet both ona given spin. Black and Red still have equal chances of hitting. Here's another example: Since there are 38 slots on the wheel,we expect any given number to hit 1 out of 38 spins on average. There have been 152 spins (coincidentally,4 x 38), and so we expect that each number should have come up 4 times onaverage. The wheel has no memory. You can certainly switch toanother number if you want, but that won't improve or worsen your chances. On even money bets when 0 comes up, instead of losing rightaway, your bet is "imprisoned" and rides again for the next spin. You don't get paid for the win, though, but it's better than losingit outright. In effect, this variation has the ability to turn a loss into a tie. One to six players are seated at the roulette table. The chips generally have a set value of 25 or 50 cents. Usually it takes a minimum of $20 to buy-in at the roulette betting table. Players may bet larger amounts by using $1, $5 and $25 regular. Inside bets consist of the following: single-number bets, including the 0, 00 and 1 through 36, are made by placing your chip in the centre of the number you select. Red or black pays even odds. You will get 2-to-1 odds if you select the winning number within the first, second or third dozen numbers. As mentioned. The dealer knows you are the winner by the color of your chips. You will notice on our illustration of the standard roulette wheel that the numbers are not consecutively arranged around the wheel. By design, they alternate between red and black and exactly opposite each other number is the corresponding higher and lower number. All in all, that edge is comparable to the "rake" in poker, and in some bets on the craps table, in baccarat and other games including sports betting.
