Roulette is a popular and classic casino game that is easy to play and has an enthusiastic following in online gaming. Players bet on numbers, spreads of number combinations and colors, generated by the fall of a small ivory ball onto a spinning wheel which is divided into 37 or 38 numbered slots, depending on the version being played. The dealer spins the wheel in a counterclockwise direction then flips the ball on the bowl's back track so that it travels clockwise. Players may continue placing bets while wheel and ball are still in motion until the dealer yells (says) "No More Bets! The ball then drops into one of the slots as it begins to slow down. The French roulette wheel has 36 numbers, and only the single zero, unlike the American roulette wheel which has the numbers 1 to 36 but with two zeros (0 and 00) You should always calculate your expectedloss and how long you can play on a given bankroll before playing any game, butwith roulette it's especially important. When the ball is gettingready to drop, the dealer will wave his hand over the table, which means "Nomore bets". Then he'll scoop up all the losing bets towards the dealer area. That way iftwo players bet on the same number (or set of numbers), then the dealer knowswho to pay, and arguments can't arise over who bet what. Sometimes the dealerwill ask you "Inside or Outside? That way, you're not locked inand you always have the ability to change your mind. There's no advantage tolimiting yourself to inside or outside. When you buy in, tell the dealer what denomination you want. Roulette games have minimum bets, which will be posted on aplacard at the table. In this way, Roulette is more like slots - one single bet canwin a lot. All the bets on the layout carry the same house edge, with the exceptionof 5-number Line Bet (0, 00, 1, 2, 3), which carries a whopping 7.29% edge! It's important tounderstand that the outcome of the roulette wheel is truly random. There's an old saying,"The wheel has no memory. There have been 152 spins (coincidentally,4 x 38), and so we expect that each number should have come up 4 times onaverage. Thechances of #27 coming up on a given spin are the same, whether it just come upon the last spin or not - 1 in 38. On an American wheel,there are 38 spots - numbers 1-36, plus 0 and 00. European games have an option called en prison which reduces the house edgeto 1.35%, but it's generally not available in the U.S., even in casinos that usethe European wheel. One to six players are seated at the roulette table. It is important to note that these roulette chips must be cashed in at the table. They may not be removed from the table when the player leaves. The betting layout starts with numbers 0 and 00 at the top, then extends from numbers 1 through 36 at the far end of the table. The "outside" betting area consists of odd or even bets which pay even money. You will get 2-to-1 odds if you select the winning number within the first, second or third dozen numbers. The same 2 to 1 odds are given for selecting any of the numbers in the three vertical columns of 12 numbers, located on one end of the betting surface For outside bets, the dealer will lay your winning chips alongside your original bet. It is up to you to pick up both your winnings and your original bet after the payoff. All inside bets are paid by the dealer, directly to you. By design, they alternate between red and black and exactly opposite each other number is the corresponding higher and lower number. The player has a 1 in 37 chance of winning and still gets 35 to 1.
