A clever player is one who understands the betting possibilities. By the skillful placing of bets on the table, a player can vary the amount of risk he is taking. Split Bet - The chip is placed on the line separating two adjacent numbers. Pays 17:1. Street Bet - A bet that covers a row of three numbers on the table. Pays 11:1. Column Bets - A bet on which of the three columns of numbers the ball may landon. Pays 2:1. Roulette is said by some to have been started or invented way back in 1655 by the French scientist Blaise Pascal, during his monastic retreat, and first played in a makeshift casino in Paris. Other historians claim however that a French monk invented it in order to help break some of the monotony of daily monastery life. Still others say it originated in an old Chinese game whose object was to arrange 37 statuettes of animals in a "magic square" of 666 (but they fail to describe the method of play) There are two standard styles of roulette tables found in American casinos. One is the standard table, which has one betting layout with the roulette wheel at one end; the other, called the double-end table, has two layouts with the wheel in the center between them. A double-end table with two layouts is operated by either three or four croupiers. To keep it simple, we'll call him the "dealer" and his assistant the "croupier". Both the 0 and 00 slots are green in color. Roulette is the game where you guess where the little marble is going to dropon the spinning wheel. You should always calculate your expectedloss and how long you can play on a given bankroll before playing any game, butwith roulette it's especially important. In most games players can continuemaking bets even while the ball is still spinning. When the ball falls into a slot, the dealer will announce thenumber and the color, and place a marker on the layout where the winning numberis. Then he'll scoop up all the losing bets towards the dealer area. Don't reach for your winnings until the dealerremoves the marker, or the dealer will scold you. There's no advantage tolimiting yourself to inside or outside. For outside bets, any bet you make has to be the table minimum. Inside bets canusually be as small a you like, as long as the total of all your inside bets isthe table minimum. It most other games a bet usually wins only even money, butRoulette gives you the chance to win 35 times your bet (a winning bet placed ona single number) Here's ahandy way to remember the payouts when you're betting on a set of numbers: Take36 divided by the quantity of numbers you're betting on, and subtract 1. All the bets on the layout carry the same house edge, with the exceptionof 5-number Line Bet (0, 00, 1, 2, 3), which carries a whopping 7.29% edge! Black and Red still have equal chances of hitting. There's an old saying,"The wheel has no memory. On an American wheel,there are 38 spots - numbers 1-36, plus 0 and 00. On even money bets when 0 comes up, instead of losing rightaway, your bet is "imprisoned" and rides again for the next spin. You don't get paid for the win, though, but it's better than losingit outright. Casino roulette uses the same basic rules and procedures in all casinos throughout the United States and Canada, as well as in the Caribbean and other island gaming resorts on the North American continent. In roulette betting, a player may request whatever value he wishes for his chips, above the 25 cent or 50 cent standard amount. Players may bet larger amounts by using $1, $5 and $25 regular. They may not be removed from the table when the player leaves. If that number wins you'll receive 35 to 1 for every chip you have bet. A bet on 1 to 18, or 19 to 36, pays even money. Again, your original bet is left on the number or combination of numbers and it is up to you to reclaim that bet. Each game begins when the dealer (sometimes called croupier) spins the wheel in one direction, and then rolls a little ivory ball along the inner edge of the wheel in the opposite direction. As the wheel turns, the ball loses momentum. All red numbers are opposite the black numbers. The player has a 1 in 37 chance of winning and still gets 35 to 1.
