A clever player is one who understands the betting possibilities. American roulette wheels usually have both the “0” and “00” on the wheel. Straight Up Bet - A chip is placed on one of the numbers. Pays 35:1. Six Number Bet - Covers two rows of three numbers each. Dozens Bet - The numbers between 1 and 36 are divided into three dozens. Roulette is said by some to have been started or invented way back in 1655 by the French scientist Blaise Pascal, during his monastic retreat, and first played in a makeshift casino in Paris. Other historians claim however that a French monk invented it in order to help break some of the monotony of daily monastery life. There are two standard styles of roulette tables found in American casinos. One is the standard table, which has one betting layout with the roulette wheel at one end; the other, called the double-end table, has two layouts with the wheel in the center between them. To keep it simple, we'll call him the "dealer" and his assistant the "croupier". He does this as the ball slows down and is about to drop off the back track. Ifyou win the second spin, your bet is "released from prison" and youget it back. One to six players are seated at the roulette table. A stack of twenty 25-cent chips is valued at $5.00, and a stack of twenty 50-cent chips is worth $10. It is important to note that these roulette chips must be cashed in at the table. They may not be removed from the table when the player leaves. Inside bets consist of the following: single-number bets, including the 0, 00 and 1 through 36, are made by placing your chip in the centre of the number you select. Actually, you can pick up a total of 36 chips which includes your original bet. Again, your original bet is left on the number or combination of numbers and it is up to you to reclaim that bet. You will notice on our illustration of the standard roulette wheel that the numbers are not consecutively arranged around the wheel. All red numbers are opposite the black numbers. The house edge is set at 5.26%, resulting from the player receiving odds of 35 to 1 rather than the true odds of 1 in 36 or 37 to 1. All in all, that edge is comparable to the "rake" in poker, and in some bets on the craps table, in baccarat and other games including sports betting. The single-0 European roulette wheel has a house edge of only 2.70%.
