By the skillful placing of bets on the table, a player can vary the amount of risk he is taking. American roulette wheels usually have both the “0” and “00” on the wheel. Split Bet - The chip is placed on the line separating two adjacent numbers. Pays 17:1. Six Number Bet - Covers two rows of three numbers each. A bet placed on the ball landing on red or black, high or low numbers, odds or even numbers. One is the standard table, which has one betting layout with the roulette wheel at one end; the other, called the double-end table, has two layouts with the wheel in the center between them. A roulette table with a single layout is usually worked by two "croupiers". The croupier who spins the wheel and deals the game is called the "wheel roller" by casino employees. To keep it simple, we'll call him the "dealer" and his assistant the "croupier". The numbers on the American roulette wheel are 1 to 36, 0, and 00. The numbers alternate between black and red. The numbers on the roulette wheel alternate pairs of odd numbers with pairs of even numbers. Both the 0 and 00 slots are green in color. Roulette would be a great game were it not for the highhouse edge - usually 5.26%, sometimes as low as 2.63%, which is still higherthan blackjack, craps, or baccarat. You should always calculate your expectedloss and how long you can play on a given bankroll before playing any game, butwith roulette it's especially important. In most games players can continuemaking bets even while the ball is still spinning. When the ball is gettingready to drop, the dealer will wave his hand over the table, which means "Nomore bets". Then he'll scoop up all the losing bets towards the dealer area. That's because if you're betting only inside and someone else isbetting only outside, he can give you both the same color chips and there won'tbe any confusion. Roulette games have minimum bets, which will be posted on aplacard at the table. For outside bets, any bet you make has to be the table minimum. It's important tounderstand that the outcome of the roulette wheel is truly random. Here's another example: Since there are 38 slots on the wheel,we expect any given number to hit 1 out of 38 spins on average. Now let's sayyou've been playing Roulette for a few hours, betting on Red every time, andyou've been keeping track of what numbers have hit. The wheel has no memory. The differencebetween the true odds and what they actually pay you is 2/38, or 5.26%. The Europeanwheel has a lower house edge (2.63%) because it has only 37 slots instead of 38(no 00) Ifyou win the second spin, your bet is "released from prison" and youget it back. Players purchase special roulette chips, each player with his own color, so that the dealer can tell who made a winning bet and pay off that player. The chips generally have a set value of 25 or 50 cents. The betting layout starts with numbers 0 and 00 at the top, then extends from numbers 1 through 36 at the far end of the table. If that number wins you'll receive 35 to 1 for every chip you have bet. Actually, you can pick up a total of 36 chips which includes your original bet. You will get 2-to-1 odds if you select the winning number within the first, second or third dozen numbers. All inside bets are paid by the dealer, directly to you. The dealer knows you are the winner by the color of your chips. Again, your original bet is left on the number or combination of numbers and it is up to you to reclaim that bet. In total, 38 numbers are represented on the betting layout. As the wheel turns, the ball loses momentum. The single-0 European roulette wheel has a house edge of only 2.70%.
