By the skillful placing of bets on the table, a player can vary the amount of risk he is taking. Corner Bet – A bet placed on the crossed lines in the middle of four numbers. Pays 8:1. Column Bets - A bet on which of the three columns of numbers the ball may landon. Pays 2:1. Roulette is said by some to have been started or invented way back in 1655 by the French scientist Blaise Pascal, during his monastic retreat, and first played in a makeshift casino in Paris. The croupier who spins the wheel and deals the game is called the "wheel roller" by casino employees. To keep it simple, we'll call him the "dealer" and his assistant the "croupier". Players may continue placing bets while wheel and ball are still in motion until the dealer yells (says) "No More Bets! All the bets on the layout carry the same house edge, with the exceptionof 5-number Line Bet (0, 00, 1, 2, 3), which carries a whopping 7.29% edge! There's an old saying,"The wheel has no memory. There have been 152 spins (coincidentally,4 x 38), and so we expect that each number should have come up 4 times onaverage. On an American wheel,there are 38 spots - numbers 1-36, plus 0 and 00. if you win, thecasino doesn't pay you 37 to 1, they pay you less - 35 to 1. The Europeanwheel has a lower house edge (2.63%) because it has only 37 slots instead of 38(no 00) If you play Roulette, the most important thing is to find a casino thatoffers the European wheel (which is called "Single 0" Roulette) Atlantic City has a special rule whichreduces the house edge to 2.7% on even money bets (Red/Black, Odd/Even,1-18/19-36): If 0 or 00 comes up on on even money bet, you lose only half yourbet. On even money bets when 0 comes up, instead of losing rightaway, your bet is "imprisoned" and rides again for the next spin. A stack of twenty 25-cent chips is valued at $5.00, and a stack of twenty 50-cent chips is worth $10. In roulette betting, a player may request whatever value he wishes for his chips, above the 25 cent or 50 cent standard amount. The dealer will specify the worth of that particular coloured chip by mating a sample chip which is placed upon the rim of the wheel. They may not be removed from the table when the player leaves. The betting layout starts with numbers 0 and 00 at the top, then extends from numbers 1 through 36 at the far end of the table. If that number wins you'll receive 35 to 1 for every chip you have bet. The "outside" betting area consists of odd or even bets which pay even money. Red or black pays even odds. A bet on 1 to 18, or 19 to 36, pays even money. The same 2 to 1 odds are given for selecting any of the numbers in the three vertical columns of 12 numbers, located on one end of the betting surface For outside bets, the dealer will lay your winning chips alongside your original bet. You will notice on our illustration of the standard roulette wheel that the numbers are not consecutively arranged around the wheel. The house edge is set at 5.26%, resulting from the player receiving odds of 35 to 1 rather than the true odds of 1 in 36 or 37 to 1.
