Roulette is said by some to have been started or invented way back in 1655 by the French scientist Blaise Pascal, during his monastic retreat, and first played in a makeshift casino in Paris. Other historians claim however that a French monk invented it in order to help break some of the monotony of daily monastery life. A double-end table with two layouts is operated by either three or four croupiers. To keep it simple, we'll call him the "dealer" and his assistant the "croupier". The dealer spins the wheel in a counterclockwise direction then flips the ball on the bowl's back track so that it travels clockwise. The French roulette wheel has 36 numbers, and only the single zero, unlike the American roulette wheel which has the numbers 1 to 36 but with two zeros (0 and 00) The numbers alternate between black and red. Both the 0 and 00 slots are green in color. Roulette would be a great game were it not for the highhouse edge - usually 5.26%, sometimes as low as 2.63%, which is still higherthan blackjack, craps, or baccarat. You should always calculate your expectedloss and how long you can play on a given bankroll before playing any game, butwith roulette it's especially important. now, let's see how to play roulette. You don't have to make just one kind of bet foreach spin, you can make several, and you win if the ball lands on any of yournumbers. The house edge is the same whether youmake one bet per spin or several. you will likely lose money faster the morebets you make, because you're betting more. Don't reach for your winnings until the dealerremoves the marker, or the dealer will scold you. If that number wins you'll receive 35 to 1 for every chip you have bet. The "outside" betting area consists of odd or even bets which pay even money. Red or black pays even odds. Naturally, you can let it ride again on the next roll or even add other chips from your winnings. You will notice on our illustration of the standard roulette wheel that the numbers are not consecutively arranged around the wheel. Run a ruler or any straight edge across the diagram and you will see that the O is opposite the 00, 1 is opposite the 2, and so on up to the 35 being directly opposite the 36. All red numbers are opposite the black numbers. The single-0 European roulette wheel has a house edge of only 2.70%. The player has a 1 in 37 chance of winning and still gets 35 to 1.
