Players bet on numbers, spreads of number combinations and colors, generated by the fall of a small ivory ball onto a spinning wheel which is divided into 37 or 38 numbered slots, depending on the version being played. Street Bet - A bet that covers a row of three numbers on the table. Pays 11:1. Dozens Bet - The numbers between 1 and 36 are divided into three dozens. 1-12, 13-24 and25-36. Pays 2:1. Column Bets - A bet on which of the three columns of numbers the ball may landon. Pays 2:1. One is the standard table, which has one betting layout with the roulette wheel at one end; the other, called the double-end table, has two layouts with the wheel in the center between them. The players begin by making their bets, placing chips on the spaces of the layout in the manner permitted by the applicable rules for the area/state/country etc. He does this as the ball slows down and is about to drop off the back track. The numbers on the American roulette wheel are 1 to 36, 0, and 00. The numbers alternate pairs of odd numbers with pairs of even numbers. The numbers on the roulette wheel alternate pairs of odd numbers with pairs of even numbers. Both the 0 and 00 slots are green in color. A dealer, or croupier spins the wheel in one direction and then rolls a small ball in the other direction. Roulette is the game where you guess where the little marble is going to dropon the spinning wheel. You should always calculate your expectedloss and how long you can play on a given bankroll before playing any game, butwith roulette it's especially important. Don't reach for your winnings until the dealerremoves the marker, or the dealer will scold you. New players often have to betold this repeatedly the first time they play because they kept forgetting andbecause they're excited about collecting their winnings. Each player's chips are a different color. Sometimes the dealerwill ask you "Inside or Outside? " when you're buying chips, to findout whether you're making inside bets (the ones listed in purple in the table,on specific numbers) or outside bets (the ones listed in yellow, on kinds ofnumbers) That's because if you're betting only inside and someone else isbetting only outside, he can give you both the same color chips and there won'tbe any confusion. In other games the color of the chipdenotes the denomination, but in Roulette the color denotes only which playerthe chip belongs to. For outside bets, any bet you make has to be the table minimum. It most other games a bet usually wins only even money, butRoulette gives you the chance to win 35 times your bet (a winning bet placed ona single number) Here's ahandy way to remember the payouts when you're betting on a set of numbers: Take36 divided by the quantity of numbers you're betting on, and subtract 1. Black and Red still have equal chances of hitting. You can certainly switch toanother number if you want, but that won't improve or worsen your chances. Thechances of #27 coming up on a given spin are the same, whether it just come upon the last spin or not - 1 in 38. The differencebetween the true odds and what they actually pay you is 2/38, or 5.26%. In effect, this variation has the ability to turn a loss into a tie. Players purchase special roulette chips, each player with his own color, so that the dealer can tell who made a winning bet and pay off that player. The "outside" betting area consists of odd or even bets which pay even money. Red or black pays even odds. It is up to you to pick up both your winnings and your original bet after the payoff. The dealer knows you are the winner by the color of your chips. Again, your original bet is left on the number or combination of numbers and it is up to you to reclaim that bet. Naturally, you can let it ride again on the next roll or even add other chips from your winnings. As the wheel turns, the ball loses momentum. That number is the declared winner for that game. By design, they alternate between red and black and exactly opposite each other number is the corresponding higher and lower number. Run a ruler or any straight edge across the diagram and you will see that the O is opposite the 00, 1 is opposite the 2, and so on up to the 35 being directly opposite the 36. The single-0 European roulette wheel has a house edge of only 2.70%.
