Gambling Play Roulette
Players bet on numbers, spreads of number combinations and colors, generated by the fall of a small ivory ball onto a spinning wheel which is divided into 37 or 38 numbered slots, depending on the version being played. Straight Up Bet - A chip is placed on one of the numbers. Pays 35:1. A bet placed on the ball landing on red or black, high or low numbers, odds or even numbers. All even moneyodds. Pays 1:1. 1-12, 13-24 and25-36. Pays 2:1. There are two standard styles of roulette tables found in American casinos. One is the standard table, which has one betting layout with the roulette wheel at one end; the other, called the double-end table, has two layouts with the wheel in the center between them. A double-end table with two layouts is operated by either three or four croupiers. ". The numbers on the American roulette wheel are 1 to 36, 0, and 00. Both the 0 and 00 slots are green in color. The ball then drops into one of the slots as it begins to slow down. That aside, French roulette is very similar to American roulette. Roulette would be a great game were it not for the highhouse edge - usually 5.26%, sometimes as low as 2.63%, which is still higherthan blackjack, craps, or baccarat. There's no advantage tolimiting yourself to inside or outside. For outside bets, any bet you make has to be the table minimum. There have been 152 spins (coincidentally,4 x 38), and so we expect that each number should have come up 4 times onaverage. The differencebetween the true odds and what they actually pay you is 2/38, or 5.26%. If you play Roulette, the most important thing is to find a casino thatoffers the European wheel (which is called "Single 0" Roulette) On even money bets when 0 comes up, instead of losing rightaway, your bet is "imprisoned" and rides again for the next spin. In effect, this variation has the ability to turn a loss into a tie. The chips generally have a set value of 25 or 50 cents. In roulette betting, a player may request whatever value he wishes for his chips, above the 25 cent or 50 cent standard amount. The "outside" betting area consists of odd or even bets which pay even money. Red or black pays even odds. A bet on 1 to 18, or 19 to 36, pays even money. You will get 2-to-1 odds if you select the winning number within the first, second or third dozen numbers. It is up to you to pick up both your winnings and your original bet after the payoff. Again, your original bet is left on the number or combination of numbers and it is up to you to reclaim that bet. Each game begins when the dealer (sometimes called croupier) spins the wheel in one direction, and then rolls a little ivory ball along the inner edge of the wheel in the opposite direction. Incidentally, there are about 90 spins or games played per hour, on average. By design, they alternate between red and black and exactly opposite each other number is the corresponding higher and lower number. All in all, that edge is comparable to the "rake" in poker, and in some bets on the craps table, in baccarat and other games including sports betting.
