Other historians claim however that a French monk invented it in order to help break some of the monotony of daily monastery life. Still others say it originated in an old Chinese game whose object was to arrange 37 statuettes of animals in a "magic square" of 666 (but they fail to describe the method of play) ". He does this as the ball slows down and is about to drop off the back track. The numbers on the American roulette wheel are 1 to 36, 0, and 00. The numbers alternate pairs of odd numbers with pairs of even numbers. The numbers on the roulette wheel alternate pairs of odd numbers with pairs of even numbers. The numbers alternate between black and red. Roulette is the game where you guess where the little marble is going to dropon the spinning wheel. For most bets it's fairly obvious - you can't miss theRed diamond for Red bets, and things like Even, 1-18, and 1st 12 are written outin plain English. The house edge is the same whether youmake one bet per spin or several. In most games players can continuemaking bets even while the ball is still spinning. When the ball is gettingready to drop, the dealer will wave his hand over the table, which means "Nomore bets". Then he'll scoop up all the losing bets towards the dealer area. New players often have to betold this repeatedly the first time they play because they kept forgetting andbecause they're excited about collecting their winnings. Sometimes the dealerwill ask you "Inside or Outside? If you're asked Inside or Outside, always answer "Both",even if you only intend to bet one or the other. There's no advantage tolimiting yourself to inside or outside. Remember thatyou can bet inside or outside if you like; there's no requirement to bet both ona given spin. All the bets on the layout carry the same house edge, with the exceptionof 5-number Line Bet (0, 00, 1, 2, 3), which carries a whopping 7.29% edge! It's more important to know what the house edge is, than how to calculateit, but here's a quick analysis in case you're interested. Your odds of winning aone-number bet are 37 to 1 (37 ways to lose, 1 way to win) The differencebetween the true odds and what they actually pay you is 2/38, or 5.26%. If you play Roulette, the most important thing is to find a casino thatoffers the European wheel (which is called "Single 0" Roulette) European games have an option called en prison which reduces the house edgeto 1.35%, but it's generally not available in the U.S., even in casinos that usethe European wheel. One to six players are seated at the roulette table. Players purchase special roulette chips, each player with his own color, so that the dealer can tell who made a winning bet and pay off that player. The chips generally have a set value of 25 or 50 cents. A stack of twenty 25-cent chips is valued at $5.00, and a stack of twenty 50-cent chips is worth $10. Usually it takes a minimum of $20 to buy-in at the roulette betting table. The dealer will specify the worth of that particular coloured chip by mating a sample chip which is placed upon the rim of the wheel. Inside bets consist of the following: single-number bets, including the 0, 00 and 1 through 36, are made by placing your chip in the centre of the number you select. Actually, you can pick up a total of 36 chips which includes your original bet. Additional combinations in this "inside" betting area are: one chip on a six number bet (pays 5 to 1); one chip on any four connecting numbers (pays 8 to 1); one chip on any connecting group of three numbers (11-1); one chip place between two connecting numbers (17-to-1) Each game begins when the dealer (sometimes called croupier) spins the wheel in one direction, and then rolls a little ivory ball along the inner edge of the wheel in the opposite direction. All in all, that edge is comparable to the "rake" in poker, and in some bets on the craps table, in baccarat and other games including sports betting.
