Players bet on numbers, spreads of number combinations and colors, generated by the fall of a small ivory ball onto a spinning wheel which is divided into 37 or 38 numbered slots, depending on the version being played. Six Number Bet - Covers two rows of three numbers each. The chip is placed on the outside line of the two rowscovered. Pays 5:1. All even moneyodds. Pays 1:1. Dozens Bet - The numbers between 1 and 36 are divided into three dozens. One is the standard table, which has one betting layout with the roulette wheel at one end; the other, called the double-end table, has two layouts with the wheel in the center between them. The players begin by making their bets, placing chips on the spaces of the layout in the manner permitted by the applicable rules for the area/state/country etc. The dealer spins the wheel in a counterclockwise direction then flips the ball on the bowl's back track so that it travels clockwise. Bets placed on the layout after this announcement are not valid and must be returned to the player(s) The numbers on the American roulette wheel are 1 to 36, 0, and 00. The numbers alternate pairs of odd numbers with pairs of even numbers. The numbers alternate between black and red. The French roulette wheel has 36 numbers, and only the single zero, unlike the American roulette wheel which has the numbers 1 to 36 but with two zeros (0 and 00) now, let's see how to play roulette. You don't have to make just one kind of bet foreach spin, you can make several, and you win if the ball lands on any of yournumbers. The house edge is the same whether youmake one bet per spin or several. In most games players can continuemaking bets even while the ball is still spinning. Minimum bets work differently for inside and outside bets. Remember thatyou can bet inside or outside if you like; there's no requirement to bet both ona given spin. All the bets on the layout carry the same house edge, with the exceptionof 5-number Line Bet (0, 00, 1, 2, 3), which carries a whopping 7.29% edge! Black and Red still have equal chances of hitting. There have been 152 spins (coincidentally,4 x 38), and so we expect that each number should have come up 4 times onaverage. You can certainly switch toanother number if you want, but that won't improve or worsen your chances. On even money bets when 0 comes up, instead of losing rightaway, your bet is "imprisoned" and rides again for the next spin. The chips generally have a set value of 25 or 50 cents. A stack of twenty 25-cent chips is valued at $5.00, and a stack of twenty 50-cent chips is worth $10. Usually it takes a minimum of $20 to buy-in at the roulette betting table. The dealer will specify the worth of that particular coloured chip by mating a sample chip which is placed upon the rim of the wheel. If that number wins you'll receive 35 to 1 for every chip you have bet. The same 2 to 1 odds are given for selecting any of the numbers in the three vertical columns of 12 numbers, located on one end of the betting surface For outside bets, the dealer will lay your winning chips alongside your original bet. It is up to you to pick up both your winnings and your original bet after the payoff. Naturally, you can let it ride again on the next roll or even add other chips from your winnings. Run a ruler or any straight edge across the diagram and you will see that the O is opposite the 00, 1 is opposite the 2, and so on up to the 35 being directly opposite the 36. All red numbers are opposite the black numbers. The house edge is set at 5.26%, resulting from the player receiving odds of 35 to 1 rather than the true odds of 1 in 36 or 37 to 1. All in all, that edge is comparable to the "rake" in poker, and in some bets on the craps table, in baccarat and other games including sports betting.
