Players bet on numbers, spreads of number combinations and colors, generated by the fall of a small ivory ball onto a spinning wheel which is divided into 37 or 38 numbered slots, depending on the version being played. Very little strategy is required as the game is completely random and based entirely on luck. A clever player is one who understands the betting possibilities. When the ball falls into a slot, the dealer will announce thenumber and the color, and place a marker on the layout where the winning numberis. Then he'll scoop up all the losing bets towards the dealer area. Each player's chips are a different color. Roulette games have minimum bets, which will be posted on aplacard at the table. For outside bets, any bet you make has to be the table minimum. In this way, Roulette is more like slots - one single bet canwin a lot. All the bets on the layout carry the same house edge, with the exceptionof 5-number Line Bet (0, 00, 1, 2, 3), which carries a whopping 7.29% edge! It's important tounderstand that the outcome of the roulette wheel is truly random. Black and Red still have equal chances of hitting. Here's another example: Since there are 38 slots on the wheel,we expect any given number to hit 1 out of 38 spins on average. Now let's sayyou've been playing Roulette for a few hours, betting on Red every time, andyou've been keeping track of what numbers have hit. The wheel has no memory. You can certainly switch toanother number if you want, but that won't improve or worsen your chances. On even money bets when 0 comes up, instead of losing rightaway, your bet is "imprisoned" and rides again for the next spin. In effect, this variation has the ability to turn a loss into a tie. The chips generally have a set value of 25 or 50 cents. Usually it takes a minimum of $20 to buy-in at the roulette betting table. This area is referred to as the "inside" betting area. Inside bets consist of the following: single-number bets, including the 0, 00 and 1 through 36, are made by placing your chip in the centre of the number you select. Actually, you can pick up a total of 36 chips which includes your original bet. Additional combinations in this "inside" betting area are: one chip on a six number bet (pays 5 to 1); one chip on any four connecting numbers (pays 8 to 1); one chip on any connecting group of three numbers (11-1); one chip place between two connecting numbers (17-to-1) The "outside" betting area consists of odd or even bets which pay even money. In many instances, more than one coloured chip is on a winning number. The perfectly balanced roulette wheel consists of 38 identical slots, individually numbered from 0, 00, 1 through 36. In total, 38 numbers are represented on the betting layout. You will notice on our illustration of the standard roulette wheel that the numbers are not consecutively arranged around the wheel. The player has a 1 in 37 chance of winning and still gets 35 to 1.
