By the skillful placing of bets on the table, a player can vary the amount of risk he is taking. Street Bet - A bet that covers a row of three numbers on the table. Pays 11:1. A bet placed on the ball landing on red or black, high or low numbers, odds or even numbers. All even moneyodds. Pays 1:1. Dozens Bet - The numbers between 1 and 36 are divided into three dozens. Still others say it originated in an old Chinese game whose object was to arrange 37 statuettes of animals in a "magic square" of 666 (but they fail to describe the method of play) One is the standard table, which has one betting layout with the roulette wheel at one end; the other, called the double-end table, has two layouts with the wheel in the center between them. A double-end table with two layouts is operated by either three or four croupiers. To keep it simple, we'll call him the "dealer" and his assistant the "croupier". The players begin by making their bets, placing chips on the spaces of the layout in the manner permitted by the applicable rules for the area/state/country etc. Players may continue placing bets while wheel and ball are still in motion until the dealer yells (says) "No More Bets! ". A dealer (known as a croupier) spins the wheel in one direction and then rolls a small ball in the other direction. Roulette is the game where you guess where the little marble is going to dropon the spinning wheel. You should always calculate your expectedloss and how long you can play on a given bankroll before playing any game, butwith roulette it's especially important. Making a bet is easy - you just place your chip(s) on the number(s), color, orsets you want to bet on. You don't have to make just one kind of bet foreach spin, you can make several, and you win if the ball lands on any of yournumbers. you will likely lose money faster the morebets you make, because you're betting more. When the ball is gettingready to drop, the dealer will wave his hand over the table, which means "Nomore bets". When the ball falls into a slot, the dealer will announce thenumber and the color, and place a marker on the layout where the winning numberis. There's no advantage tolimiting yourself to inside or outside. For outside bets, any bet you make has to be the table minimum. Inside bets canusually be as small a you like, as long as the total of all your inside bets isthe table minimum. Here's ahandy way to remember the payouts when you're betting on a set of numbers: Take36 divided by the quantity of numbers you're betting on, and subtract 1. All the bets on the layout carry the same house edge, with the exceptionof 5-number Line Bet (0, 00, 1, 2, 3), which carries a whopping 7.29% edge! There's an old saying,"The wheel has no memory. Here's another example: Since there are 38 slots on the wheel,we expect any given number to hit 1 out of 38 spins on average. There have been 152 spins (coincidentally,4 x 38), and so we expect that each number should have come up 4 times onaverage. On an American wheel,there are 38 spots - numbers 1-36, plus 0 and 00. The Europeanwheel has a lower house edge (2.63%) because it has only 37 slots instead of 38(no 00) A stack of twenty 25-cent chips is valued at $5.00, and a stack of twenty 50-cent chips is worth $10. It is important to note that these roulette chips must be cashed in at the table. They may not be removed from the table when the player leaves. Actually, you can pick up a total of 36 chips which includes your original bet. A bet on 1 to 18, or 19 to 36, pays even money. You will get 2-to-1 odds if you select the winning number within the first, second or third dozen numbers. The same 2 to 1 odds are given for selecting any of the numbers in the three vertical columns of 12 numbers, located on one end of the betting surface For outside bets, the dealer will lay your winning chips alongside your original bet. Again, your original bet is left on the number or combination of numbers and it is up to you to reclaim that bet. In total, 38 numbers are represented on the betting layout. You will notice on our illustration of the standard roulette wheel that the numbers are not consecutively arranged around the wheel. The house edge is set at 5.26%, resulting from the player receiving odds of 35 to 1 rather than the true odds of 1 in 36 or 37 to 1. All in all, that edge is comparable to the "rake" in poker, and in some bets on the craps table, in baccarat and other games including sports betting.
