Players bet on numbers, spreads of number combinations and colors, generated by the fall of a small ivory ball onto a spinning wheel which is divided into 37 or 38 numbered slots, depending on the version being played. A clever player is one who understands the betting possibilities. Six Number Bet - Covers two rows of three numbers each. A bet placed on the ball landing on red or black, high or low numbers, odds or even numbers. Dozens Bet - The numbers between 1 and 36 are divided into three dozens. There are two standard styles of roulette tables found in American casinos. The croupier who spins the wheel and deals the game is called the "wheel roller" by casino employees. He does this as the ball slows down and is about to drop off the back track. The numbers alternate between black and red. Both the 0 and 00 slots are green in color. All the bets on the layout carry the same house edge, with the exceptionof 5-number Line Bet (0, 00, 1, 2, 3), which carries a whopping 7.29% edge! Here's another example: Since there are 38 slots on the wheel,we expect any given number to hit 1 out of 38 spins on average. There have been 152 spins (coincidentally,4 x 38), and so we expect that each number should have come up 4 times onaverage. On an American wheel,there are 38 spots - numbers 1-36, plus 0 and 00. The Europeanwheel has a lower house edge (2.63%) because it has only 37 slots instead of 38(no 00) Atlantic City has a special rule whichreduces the house edge to 2.7% on even money bets (Red/Black, Odd/Even,1-18/19-36): If 0 or 00 comes up on on even money bet, you lose only half yourbet. On even money bets when 0 comes up, instead of losing rightaway, your bet is "imprisoned" and rides again for the next spin. Ifyou win the second spin, your bet is "released from prison" and youget it back. One to six players are seated at the roulette table. Players purchase special roulette chips, each player with his own color, so that the dealer can tell who made a winning bet and pay off that player. The dealer will specify the worth of that particular coloured chip by mating a sample chip which is placed upon the rim of the wheel. They may not be removed from the table when the player leaves. Actually, you can pick up a total of 36 chips which includes your original bet. The same 2 to 1 odds are given for selecting any of the numbers in the three vertical columns of 12 numbers, located on one end of the betting surface For outside bets, the dealer will lay your winning chips alongside your original bet. All inside bets are paid by the dealer, directly to you. Each game begins when the dealer (sometimes called croupier) spins the wheel in one direction, and then rolls a little ivory ball along the inner edge of the wheel in the opposite direction. That number is the declared winner for that game. Incidentally, there are about 90 spins or games played per hour, on average. The house edge is set at 5.26%, resulting from the player receiving odds of 35 to 1 rather than the true odds of 1 in 36 or 37 to 1. The player has a 1 in 37 chance of winning and still gets 35 to 1.
