American roulette wheels usually have both the “0” and “00” on the wheel. Street Bet - A bet that covers a row of three numbers on the table. Pays 11:1. Five Number Bet - This bet covers only the numbers 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3. Pays 6:1 if any one of the numbers comes up. All even moneyodds. Pays 1:1. 1-12, 13-24 and25-36. Pays 2:1. Other historians claim however that a French monk invented it in order to help break some of the monotony of daily monastery life. There are two standard styles of roulette tables found in American casinos. A roulette table with a single layout is usually worked by two "croupiers". The croupier who spins the wheel and deals the game is called the "wheel roller" by casino employees. To keep it simple, we'll call him the "dealer" and his assistant the "croupier". Bets placed on the layout after this announcement are not valid and must be returned to the player(s) American Roulette is played using a wheel that consists of thirty-eight slots, each with its own number. A dealer, or croupier spins the wheel in one direction and then rolls a small ball in the other direction. All the bets on the layout carry the same house edge, with the exceptionof 5-number Line Bet (0, 00, 1, 2, 3), which carries a whopping 7.29% edge! If Black hascome up for the last 10 spins in a row, the next spin is not more likely to beRed. The wheel has no memory. The differencebetween the true odds and what they actually pay you is 2/38, or 5.26%. European games have an option called en prison which reduces the house edgeto 1.35%, but it's generally not available in the U.S., even in casinos that usethe European wheel. On even money bets when 0 comes up, instead of losing rightaway, your bet is "imprisoned" and rides again for the next spin. Ifyou win the second spin, your bet is "released from prison" and youget it back. You don't get paid for the win, though, but it's better than losingit outright. The chips generally have a set value of 25 or 50 cents. The dealer will specify the worth of that particular coloured chip by mating a sample chip which is placed upon the rim of the wheel. They may not be removed from the table when the player leaves. All inside bets are paid by the dealer, directly to you. In many instances, more than one coloured chip is on a winning number. Again, your original bet is left on the number or combination of numbers and it is up to you to reclaim that bet. The perfectly balanced roulette wheel consists of 38 identical slots, individually numbered from 0, 00, 1 through 36. Each game begins when the dealer (sometimes called croupier) spins the wheel in one direction, and then rolls a little ivory ball along the inner edge of the wheel in the opposite direction. Incidentally, there are about 90 spins or games played per hour, on average. You will notice on our illustration of the standard roulette wheel that the numbers are not consecutively arranged around the wheel. By design, they alternate between red and black and exactly opposite each other number is the corresponding higher and lower number. The house edge is set at 5.26%, resulting from the player receiving odds of 35 to 1 rather than the true odds of 1 in 36 or 37 to 1.
