By the skillful placing of bets on the table, a player can vary the amount of risk he is taking. American roulette wheels usually have both the “0” and “00” on the wheel. Straight Up Bet - A chip is placed on one of the numbers. Pays 35:1. All even moneyodds. Pays 1:1. Dozens Bet - The numbers between 1 and 36 are divided into three dozens. Still others say it originated in an old Chinese game whose object was to arrange 37 statuettes of animals in a "magic square" of 666 (but they fail to describe the method of play) There are two standard styles of roulette tables found in American casinos. One is the standard table, which has one betting layout with the roulette wheel at one end; the other, called the double-end table, has two layouts with the wheel in the center between them. The croupier who spins the wheel and deals the game is called the "wheel roller" by casino employees. The players begin by making their bets, placing chips on the spaces of the layout in the manner permitted by the applicable rules for the area/state/country etc. The numbers alternate pairs of odd numbers with pairs of even numbers. The numbers alternate between black and red. Both the 0 and 00 slots are green in color. You should always calculate your expectedloss and how long you can play on a given bankroll before playing any game, butwith roulette it's especially important. Making a bet is easy - you just place your chip(s) on the number(s), color, orsets you want to bet on. For most bets it's fairly obvious - you can't miss theRed diamond for Red bets, and things like Even, 1-18, and 1st 12 are written outin plain English. It most other games a bet usually wins only even money, butRoulette gives you the chance to win 35 times your bet (a winning bet placed ona single number) Here's ahandy way to remember the payouts when you're betting on a set of numbers: Take36 divided by the quantity of numbers you're betting on, and subtract 1. All the bets on the layout carry the same house edge, with the exceptionof 5-number Line Bet (0, 00, 1, 2, 3), which carries a whopping 7.29% edge! " That means it doesn't know what it spunbefore, and even if it did, the wheel can't select what number comes up out ofits own volition. You can certainly switch toanother number if you want, but that won't improve or worsen your chances. It's more important to know what the house edge is, than how to calculateit, but here's a quick analysis in case you're interested. Your odds of winning aone-number bet are 37 to 1 (37 ways to lose, 1 way to win) The differencebetween the true odds and what they actually pay you is 2/38, or 5.26%. In effect, this variation has the ability to turn a loss into a tie. One to six players are seated at the roulette table. Players may bet larger amounts by using $1, $5 and $25 regular. It is important to note that these roulette chips must be cashed in at the table. If that number wins you'll receive 35 to 1 for every chip you have bet. Additional combinations in this "inside" betting area are: one chip on a six number bet (pays 5 to 1); one chip on any four connecting numbers (pays 8 to 1); one chip on any connecting group of three numbers (11-1); one chip place between two connecting numbers (17-to-1) The same 2 to 1 odds are given for selecting any of the numbers in the three vertical columns of 12 numbers, located on one end of the betting surface For outside bets, the dealer will lay your winning chips alongside your original bet. It is up to you to pick up both your winnings and your original bet after the payoff. By design, they alternate between red and black and exactly opposite each other number is the corresponding higher and lower number. All red numbers are opposite the black numbers. The house edge is set at 5.26%, resulting from the player receiving odds of 35 to 1 rather than the true odds of 1 in 36 or 37 to 1. All in all, that edge is comparable to the "rake" in poker, and in some bets on the craps table, in baccarat and other games including sports betting. The player has a 1 in 37 chance of winning and still gets 35 to 1.
