Very little strategy is required as the game is completely random and based entirely on luck. This gives the players slightly better odds. Straight Up Bet - A chip is placed on one of the numbers. Pays 35:1. Street Bet - A bet that covers a row of three numbers on the table. Pays 11:1. A bet placed on the ball landing on red or black, high or low numbers, odds or even numbers. The croupier who spins the wheel and deals the game is called the "wheel roller" by casino employees. To keep it simple, we'll call him the "dealer" and his assistant the "croupier". The dealer spins the wheel in a counterclockwise direction then flips the ball on the bowl's back track so that it travels clockwise. Players may continue placing bets while wheel and ball are still in motion until the dealer yells (says) "No More Bets! The numbers on the American roulette wheel are 1 to 36, 0, and 00. The ball then drops into one of the slots as it begins to slow down. The numbers on the roulette wheel alternate pairs of odd numbers with pairs of even numbers. Both the 0 and 00 slots are green in color. For most bets it's fairly obvious - you can't miss theRed diamond for Red bets, and things like Even, 1-18, and 1st 12 are written outin plain English. When you buy in, tell the dealer what denomination you want. Inside bets canusually be as small a you like, as long as the total of all your inside bets isthe table minimum. In this way, Roulette is more like slots - one single bet canwin a lot. The Europeanwheel has a lower house edge (2.63%) because it has only 37 slots instead of 38(no 00) Ifyou win the second spin, your bet is "released from prison" and youget it back. If that number wins you'll receive 35 to 1 for every chip you have bet. Additional combinations in this "inside" betting area are: one chip on a six number bet (pays 5 to 1); one chip on any four connecting numbers (pays 8 to 1); one chip on any connecting group of three numbers (11-1); one chip place between two connecting numbers (17-to-1) It is up to you to pick up both your winnings and your original bet after the payoff. All inside bets are paid by the dealer, directly to you. Again, your original bet is left on the number or combination of numbers and it is up to you to reclaim that bet. In total, 38 numbers are represented on the betting layout. Each game begins when the dealer (sometimes called croupier) spins the wheel in one direction, and then rolls a little ivory ball along the inner edge of the wheel in the opposite direction. It bounces among the slots and finally falls into one of the numbered slots. That number is the declared winner for that game. By design, they alternate between red and black and exactly opposite each other number is the corresponding higher and lower number. All red numbers are opposite the black numbers. The house edge is set at 5.26%, resulting from the player receiving odds of 35 to 1 rather than the true odds of 1 in 36 or 37 to 1.
