A clever player is one who understands the betting possibilities. American roulette wheels usually have both the “0” and “00” on the wheel. Corner Bet – A bet placed on the crossed lines in the middle of four numbers. Pays 8:1. Five Number Bet - This bet covers only the numbers 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3. Pays 6:1 if any one of the numbers comes up. Dozens Bet - The numbers between 1 and 36 are divided into three dozens. Roulette is said by some to have been started or invented way back in 1655 by the French scientist Blaise Pascal, during his monastic retreat, and first played in a makeshift casino in Paris. One is the standard table, which has one betting layout with the roulette wheel at one end; the other, called the double-end table, has two layouts with the wheel in the center between them. The players begin by making their bets, placing chips on the spaces of the layout in the manner permitted by the applicable rules for the area/state/country etc. Bets placed on the layout after this announcement are not valid and must be returned to the player(s) The numbers alternate pairs of odd numbers with pairs of even numbers. The numbers alternate between black and red. The numbers on the roulette wheel alternate pairs of odd numbers with pairs of even numbers. Both the 0 and 00 slots are green in color. Roulette would be a great game were it not for the highhouse edge - usually 5.26%, sometimes as low as 2.63%, which is still higherthan blackjack, craps, or baccarat. For most bets it's fairly obvious - you can't miss theRed diamond for Red bets, and things like Even, 1-18, and 1st 12 are written outin plain English. Here are thedifferent bets you can make. If Black hascome up for the last 10 spins in a row, the next spin is not more likely to beRed. Here's another example: Since there are 38 slots on the wheel,we expect any given number to hit 1 out of 38 spins on average. There have been 152 spins (coincidentally,4 x 38), and so we expect that each number should have come up 4 times onaverage. You can certainly switch toanother number if you want, but that won't improve or worsen your chances. Players purchase special roulette chips, each player with his own color, so that the dealer can tell who made a winning bet and pay off that player. A stack of twenty 25-cent chips is valued at $5.00, and a stack of twenty 50-cent chips is worth $10. Players may bet larger amounts by using $1, $5 and $25 regular. The betting layout starts with numbers 0 and 00 at the top, then extends from numbers 1 through 36 at the far end of the table. The "outside" betting area consists of odd or even bets which pay even money. A bet on 1 to 18, or 19 to 36, pays even money. You will get 2-to-1 odds if you select the winning number within the first, second or third dozen numbers. All inside bets are paid by the dealer, directly to you. In many instances, more than one coloured chip is on a winning number. That number is the declared winner for that game. Run a ruler or any straight edge across the diagram and you will see that the O is opposite the 00, 1 is opposite the 2, and so on up to the 35 being directly opposite the 36. All red numbers are opposite the black numbers.
