Players bet on numbers, spreads of number combinations and colors, generated by the fall of a small ivory ball onto a spinning wheel which is divided into 37 or 38 numbered slots, depending on the version being played. Straight Up Bet - A chip is placed on one of the numbers. Pays 35:1. The chip is placed on the outside line of the two rowscovered. Pays 5:1. A bet placed on the ball landing on red or black, high or low numbers, odds or even numbers. Dozens Bet - The numbers between 1 and 36 are divided into three dozens. A roulette table with a single layout is usually worked by two "croupiers". The croupier who spins the wheel and deals the game is called the "wheel roller" by casino employees. ". He does this as the ball slows down and is about to drop off the back track. The numbers on the American roulette wheel are 1 to 36, 0, and 00. The ball then drops into one of the slots as it begins to slow down. The French roulette wheel has 36 numbers, and only the single zero, unlike the American roulette wheel which has the numbers 1 to 36 but with two zeros (0 and 00) The numbers alternate between black and red. Making a bet is easy - you just place your chip(s) on the number(s), color, orsets you want to bet on. For most bets it's fairly obvious - you can't miss theRed diamond for Red bets, and things like Even, 1-18, and 1st 12 are written outin plain English. We've added blue circled letters to the diagram to point outhow to make the not-so-obvious bets (the sets of 2-6 numbers) When the ball falls into a slot, the dealer will announce thenumber and the color, and place a marker on the layout where the winning numberis. Don't reach for your winnings until the dealerremoves the marker, or the dealer will scold you. Each player's chips are a different color. In other games the color of the chipdenotes the denomination, but in Roulette the color denotes only which playerthe chip belongs to. Roulette chips can in fact be any denomination - $1, $5,$25, etc. For outside bets, any bet you make has to be the table minimum. Inside bets canusually be as small a you like, as long as the total of all your inside bets isthe table minimum. Remember thatyou can bet inside or outside if you like; there's no requirement to bet both ona given spin. Here's ahandy way to remember the payouts when you're betting on a set of numbers: Take36 divided by the quantity of numbers you're betting on, and subtract 1. If Black hascome up for the last 10 spins in a row, the next spin is not more likely to beRed. Now let's sayyou've been playing Roulette for a few hours, betting on Red every time, andyou've been keeping track of what numbers have hit. You can certainly switch toanother number if you want, but that won't improve or worsen your chances. On an American wheel, there are 38 spots - numbers 1-36, plus 0 and 00. Thelast time we checked, Single 0 Roulette was available at the Stratosphere andthe Monte Carlo on the Vegas Strip. Players purchase special roulette chips, each player with his own color, so that the dealer can tell who made a winning bet and pay off that player. A stack of twenty 25-cent chips is valued at $5.00, and a stack of twenty 50-cent chips is worth $10. Usually it takes a minimum of $20 to buy-in at the roulette betting table. Players may bet larger amounts by using $1, $5 and $25 regular. This area is referred to as the "inside" betting area. Actually, you can pick up a total of 36 chips which includes your original bet. The "outside" betting area consists of odd or even bets which pay even money. Red or black pays even odds. You will get 2-to-1 odds if you select the winning number within the first, second or third dozen numbers. Again, your original bet is left on the number or combination of numbers and it is up to you to reclaim that bet. That number is the declared winner for that game. You will notice on our illustration of the standard roulette wheel that the numbers are not consecutively arranged around the wheel.
