Players bet on numbers, spreads of number combinations and colors, generated by the fall of a small ivory ball onto a spinning wheel which is divided into 37 or 38 numbered slots, depending on the version being played. Some European casinos have only a “0”. Straight Up Bet - A chip is placed on one of the numbers. Pays 35:1. Split Bet - The chip is placed on the line separating two adjacent numbers. Here's ahandy way to remember the payouts when you're betting on a set of numbers: Take36 divided by the quantity of numbers you're betting on, and subtract 1. Black and Red still have equal chances of hitting. There have been 152 spins (coincidentally,4 x 38), and so we expect that each number should have come up 4 times onaverage. The wheel has no memory. Thechances of #27 coming up on a given spin are the same, whether it just come upon the last spin or not - 1 in 38. The differencebetween the true odds and what they actually pay you is 2/38, or 5.26%. If you play Roulette, the most important thing is to find a casino thatoffers the European wheel (which is called "Single 0" Roulette) European games have an option called en prison which reduces the house edgeto 1.35%, but it's generally not available in the U.S., even in casinos that usethe European wheel. On even money bets when 0 comes up, instead of losing rightaway, your bet is "imprisoned" and rides again for the next spin. You don't get paid for the win, though, but it's better than losingit outright. Players purchase special roulette chips, each player with his own color, so that the dealer can tell who made a winning bet and pay off that player. Usually it takes a minimum of $20 to buy-in at the roulette betting table. It is important to note that these roulette chips must be cashed in at the table. The betting layout starts with numbers 0 and 00 at the top, then extends from numbers 1 through 36 at the far end of the table. Red or black pays even odds. You will get 2-to-1 odds if you select the winning number within the first, second or third dozen numbers. The dealer knows you are the winner by the color of your chips. Naturally, you can let it ride again on the next roll or even add other chips from your winnings. You will notice on our illustration of the standard roulette wheel that the numbers are not consecutively arranged around the wheel. Run a ruler or any straight edge across the diagram and you will see that the O is opposite the 00, 1 is opposite the 2, and so on up to the 35 being directly opposite the 36. All in all, that edge is comparable to the "rake" in poker, and in some bets on the craps table, in baccarat and other games including sports betting. The player has a 1 in 37 chance of winning and still gets 35 to 1.
