Roulette is said by some to have been started or invented way back in 1655 by the French scientist Blaise Pascal, during his monastic retreat, and first played in a makeshift casino in Paris. Still others say it originated in an old Chinese game whose object was to arrange 37 statuettes of animals in a "magic square" of 666 (but they fail to describe the method of play) There are two standard styles of roulette tables found in American casinos. The players begin by making their bets, placing chips on the spaces of the layout in the manner permitted by the applicable rules for the area/state/country etc. The dealer spins the wheel in a counterclockwise direction then flips the ball on the bowl's back track so that it travels clockwise. Players may continue placing bets while wheel and ball are still in motion until the dealer yells (says) "No More Bets! He does this as the ball slows down and is about to drop off the back track. That aside, French roulette is very similar to American roulette. Roulette is the game where you guess where the little marble is going to dropon the spinning wheel. Making a bet is easy - you just place your chip(s) on the number(s), color, orsets you want to bet on. We've added blue circled letters to the diagram to point outhow to make the not-so-obvious bets (the sets of 2-6 numbers) The house edge is the same whether youmake one bet per spin or several. New players often have to betold this repeatedly the first time they play because they kept forgetting andbecause they're excited about collecting their winnings. That way, you're not locked inand you always have the ability to change your mind. Roulette chips can in fact be any denomination - $1, $5,$25, etc. Inside bets canusually be as small a you like, as long as the total of all your inside bets isthe table minimum. It most other games a bet usually wins only even money, butRoulette gives you the chance to win 35 times your bet (a winning bet placed ona single number) All the bets on the layout carry the same house edge, with the exceptionof 5-number Line Bet (0, 00, 1, 2, 3), which carries a whopping 7.29% edge! Black and Red still have equal chances of hitting. There's an old saying,"The wheel has no memory. There have been 152 spins (coincidentally,4 x 38), and so we expect that each number should have come up 4 times onaverage. Thechances of #27 coming up on a given spin are the same, whether it just come upon the last spin or not - 1 in 38. It's more important to know what the house edge is, than how to calculateit, but here's a quick analysis in case you're interested. Your odds of winning aone-number bet are 37 to 1 (37 ways to lose, 1 way to win) Atlantic City has a special rule whichreduces the house edge to 2.7% on even money bets (Red/Black, Odd/Even,1-18/19-36): If 0 or 00 comes up on on even money bet, you lose only half yourbet. One to six players are seated at the roulette table. The chips generally have a set value of 25 or 50 cents. It is important to note that these roulette chips must be cashed in at the table. Additional combinations in this "inside" betting area are: one chip on a six number bet (pays 5 to 1); one chip on any four connecting numbers (pays 8 to 1); one chip on any connecting group of three numbers (11-1); one chip place between two connecting numbers (17-to-1) The "outside" betting area consists of odd or even bets which pay even money. A bet on 1 to 18, or 19 to 36, pays even money. Again, your original bet is left on the number or combination of numbers and it is up to you to reclaim that bet. As the wheel turns, the ball loses momentum. That number is the declared winner for that game. Run a ruler or any straight edge across the diagram and you will see that the O is opposite the 00, 1 is opposite the 2, and so on up to the 35 being directly opposite the 36. The house edge is set at 5.26%, resulting from the player receiving odds of 35 to 1 rather than the true odds of 1 in 36 or 37 to 1.
