A clever player is one who understands the betting possibilities. Straight Up Bet - A chip is placed on one of the numbers. Pays 35:1. Corner Bet – A bet placed on the crossed lines in the middle of four numbers. Pays 8:1. All even moneyodds. Pays 1:1. 1-12, 13-24 and25-36. Pays 2:1. Roulette is said by some to have been started or invented way back in 1655 by the French scientist Blaise Pascal, during his monastic retreat, and first played in a makeshift casino in Paris. Still others say it originated in an old Chinese game whose object was to arrange 37 statuettes of animals in a "magic square" of 666 (but they fail to describe the method of play) The croupier who spins the wheel and deals the game is called the "wheel roller" by casino employees. To keep it simple, we'll call him the "dealer" and his assistant the "croupier". Both the 0 and 00 slots are green in color. The numbers alternate between black and red. You can certainly switch toanother number if you want, but that won't improve or worsen your chances. if you win, thecasino doesn't pay you 37 to 1, they pay you less - 35 to 1. The Europeanwheel has a lower house edge (2.63%) because it has only 37 slots instead of 38(no 00) Atlantic City has a special rule whichreduces the house edge to 2.7% on even money bets (Red/Black, Odd/Even,1-18/19-36): If 0 or 00 comes up on on even money bet, you lose only half yourbet. On even money bets when 0 comes up, instead of losing rightaway, your bet is "imprisoned" and rides again for the next spin. Ifyou win the second spin, your bet is "released from prison" and youget it back. You don't get paid for the win, though, but it's better than losingit outright. Casino roulette uses the same basic rules and procedures in all casinos throughout the United States and Canada, as well as in the Caribbean and other island gaming resorts on the North American continent. Players purchase special roulette chips, each player with his own color, so that the dealer can tell who made a winning bet and pay off that player. Actually, you can pick up a total of 36 chips which includes your original bet. A bet on 1 to 18, or 19 to 36, pays even money. You will get 2-to-1 odds if you select the winning number within the first, second or third dozen numbers. The same 2 to 1 odds are given for selecting any of the numbers in the three vertical columns of 12 numbers, located on one end of the betting surface For outside bets, the dealer will lay your winning chips alongside your original bet. It is up to you to pick up both your winnings and your original bet after the payoff. In many instances, more than one coloured chip is on a winning number. Again, your original bet is left on the number or combination of numbers and it is up to you to reclaim that bet. The perfectly balanced roulette wheel consists of 38 identical slots, individually numbered from 0, 00, 1 through 36. Each game begins when the dealer (sometimes called croupier) spins the wheel in one direction, and then rolls a little ivory ball along the inner edge of the wheel in the opposite direction. It bounces among the slots and finally falls into one of the numbered slots.
