Players bet on numbers, spreads of number combinations and colors, generated by the fall of a small ivory ball onto a spinning wheel which is divided into 37 or 38 numbered slots, depending on the version being played. Five Number Bet - This bet covers only the numbers 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3. Pays 6:1 if any one of the numbers comes up. Six Number Bet - Covers two rows of three numbers each. The chip is placed on the outside line of the two rowscovered. Pays 5:1. Column Bets - A bet on which of the three columns of numbers the ball may landon. Pays 2:1. A roulette table with a single layout is usually worked by two "croupiers". The dealer spins the wheel in a counterclockwise direction then flips the ball on the bowl's back track so that it travels clockwise. Players may continue placing bets while wheel and ball are still in motion until the dealer yells (says) "No More Bets! American Roulette is played using a wheel that consists of thirty-eight slots, each with its own number. The numbers on the American roulette wheel are 1 to 36, 0, and 00. The ball then drops into one of the slots as it begins to slow down. The French roulette wheel has 36 numbers, and only the single zero, unlike the American roulette wheel which has the numbers 1 to 36 but with two zeros (0 and 00) That aside, French roulette is very similar to American roulette. Making a bet is easy - you just place your chip(s) on the number(s), color, orsets you want to bet on. For most bets it's fairly obvious - you can't miss theRed diamond for Red bets, and things like Even, 1-18, and 1st 12 are written outin plain English. We've added blue circled letters to the diagram to point outhow to make the not-so-obvious bets (the sets of 2-6 numbers) Here are thedifferent bets you can make. You don't have to make just one kind of bet foreach spin, you can make several, and you win if the ball lands on any of yournumbers. In most games players can continuemaking bets even while the ball is still spinning. When the ball is gettingready to drop, the dealer will wave his hand over the table, which means "Nomore bets". Here's ahandy way to remember the payouts when you're betting on a set of numbers: Take36 divided by the quantity of numbers you're betting on, and subtract 1. All the bets on the layout carry the same house edge, with the exceptionof 5-number Line Bet (0, 00, 1, 2, 3), which carries a whopping 7.29% edge! There have been 152 spins (coincidentally,4 x 38), and so we expect that each number should have come up 4 times onaverage. Your odds of winning aone-number bet are 37 to 1 (37 ways to lose, 1 way to win) if you win, thecasino doesn't pay you 37 to 1, they pay you less - 35 to 1. Ifyou win the second spin, your bet is "released from prison" and youget it back. You don't get paid for the win, though, but it's better than losingit outright. The chips generally have a set value of 25 or 50 cents. A stack of twenty 25-cent chips is valued at $5.00, and a stack of twenty 50-cent chips is worth $10. They may not be removed from the table when the player leaves. This area is referred to as the "inside" betting area. Inside bets consist of the following: single-number bets, including the 0, 00 and 1 through 36, are made by placing your chip in the centre of the number you select. If that number wins you'll receive 35 to 1 for every chip you have bet. Actually, you can pick up a total of 36 chips which includes your original bet. Red or black pays even odds. You will get 2-to-1 odds if you select the winning number within the first, second or third dozen numbers. You will notice on our illustration of the standard roulette wheel that the numbers are not consecutively arranged around the wheel. By design, they alternate between red and black and exactly opposite each other number is the corresponding higher and lower number. The single-0 European roulette wheel has a house edge of only 2.70%.
