Casino Games Casinos Gambling Roulette Players bet on numbers, spreads of number combinations and colors, generated by the fall of a small ivory ball onto a spinning wheel which is divided into 37 or 38 numbered slots, depending on the version being played. American roulette wheels usually have both the “0” and “00” on the wheel. Corner Bet – A bet placed on the crossed lines in the middle of four numbers. Pays 8:1. Six Number Bet - Covers two rows of three numbers each. 1-12, 13-24 and25-36. Pays 2:1. There are two standard styles of roulette tables found in American casinos. One is the standard table, which has one betting layout with the roulette wheel at one end; the other, called the double-end table, has two layouts with the wheel in the center between them. The players begin by making their bets, placing chips on the spaces of the layout in the manner permitted by the applicable rules for the area/state/country etc. The dealer spins the wheel in a counterclockwise direction then flips the ball on the bowl's back track so that it travels clockwise. He does this as the ball slows down and is about to drop off the back track. A dealer (known as a croupier) spins the wheel in one direction and then rolls a small ball in the other direction. The ball then drops into one of the slots as it begins to slow down. The numbers on the roulette wheel alternate pairs of odd numbers with pairs of even numbers. Roulette would be a great game were it not for the highhouse edge - usually 5.26%, sometimes as low as 2.63%, which is still higherthan blackjack, craps, or baccarat. Here are thedifferent bets you can make. When the ball is gettingready to drop, the dealer will wave his hand over the table, which means "Nomore bets". That way, you're not locked inand you always have the ability to change your mind. There's no advantage tolimiting yourself to inside or outside. In other games the color of the chipdenotes the denomination, but in Roulette the color denotes only which playerthe chip belongs to. Roulette chips can in fact be any denomination - $1, $5,$25, etc. In this way, Roulette is more like slots - one single bet canwin a lot. If Black hascome up for the last 10 spins in a row, the next spin is not more likely to beRed. Here's another example: Since there are 38 slots on the wheel,we expect any given number to hit 1 out of 38 spins on average. The wheel has no memory. On an American wheel, there are 38 spots - numbers 1-36, plus 0 and 00. The Europeanwheel has a lower house edge (2.63%) because it has only 37 slots instead of 38(no 00) Thelast time we checked, Single 0 Roulette was available at the Stratosphere andthe Monte Carlo on the Vegas Strip. Atlantic City has a special rule whichreduces the house edge to 2.7% on even money bets (Red/Black, Odd/Even,1-18/19-36): If 0 or 00 comes up on on even money bet, you lose only half yourbet. European games have an option called en prison which reduces the house edgeto 1.35%, but it's generally not available in the U.S., even in casinos that usethe European wheel. You don't get paid for the win, though, but it's better than losingit outright. Players purchase special roulette chips, each player with his own color, so that the dealer can tell who made a winning bet and pay off that player. The chips generally have a set value of 25 or 50 cents. A stack of twenty 25-cent chips is valued at $5.00, and a stack of twenty 50-cent chips is worth $10. Usually it takes a minimum of $20 to buy-in at the roulette betting table. Red or black pays even odds. You will get 2-to-1 odds if you select the winning number within the first, second or third dozen numbers. The same 2 to 1 odds are given for selecting any of the numbers in the three vertical columns of 12 numbers, located on one end of the betting surface For outside bets, the dealer will lay your winning chips alongside your original bet. Naturally, you can let it ride again on the next roll or even add other chips from your winnings. In total, 38 numbers are represented on the betting layout. You will notice on our illustration of the standard roulette wheel that the numbers are not consecutively arranged around the wheel. By design, they alternate between red and black and exactly opposite each other number is the corresponding higher and lower number. All red numbers are opposite the black numbers.
